What is a good telescope for a ten year old child?

My son wants one for Christmas. I have found tons on Ebay in different price ranges, of course-but I have no clue what is junk and what is good. I don't want to spend hundreds on his first one because I am not positive how far he will go with Astronomy. I need to get it ordered in the next couple of days so I can get it on time. Thanks for any ideas.

I am a current Senior in high school, and I just want to take an Astronomy class for fun. I tried looking around my local community colleges, but unfortunately the classes are offered during my schooling hours. I mean, is it too much to ask if I want to study Astronomy and get credit for it at the same time?
HOW can I do this? My school counselor has not been much of a help. I don't want to do the class through a college, because
